Web Browser Options (i.e. NOT Chrome, Firefox and Edge)

With Firefox making a pain of itself (https://www.ihatemypc.com.au/post/firefox-is-freezing-no-irony-detected), and Microsoft Edge becoming an incarnation of Google Chrome (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4501095/download-the-new-microsoft-edge-based-on-chromium) I decided I need to look into some alternative web browsers.

After all, there's really no point in having just 2 versions of Chrome installed.

I Googled, as we do, some reliable advice and the following article popped up: https://au.pcmag.com/browsers/47158/8-unique-web-browsers-to-try

The first 2 in the list are the ones I decided suited me; Ice Dragon and ...

Epic Privacy Browser (not so epic web site).

As you can see they are both based on source code from other web browsers i.e. Chrome and Firefox.

But they've branched off some time back and got on with their own thing.

Ice Dragon's thing is that it offers much better security when visiting web sites. It has built in malware scanning and uses a private DNS service which hopefully prevents you from being able to go to bad web sites in the first place.

Epic Privacy's thing is, well, privacy. It has a built in VPN (virtual private network) which means you can pretend to be other palces in the world, among other things. All the "tracking things" you have to turn off in other web browsers are turned off by default in this one. So it is pretty hard to leave yourself exposed.

The article outlines 6 other web browsers of varying nature but for me these 2 are a good start for the avergae user needing a simple and safe alternative to the usual 3 web browsers.
